FORWARD-WATER contains 7 Work Packages. The nontechnical WP1 and WP7 refer to management and exploitation and dissemination of the project’s results, while the technical part of the project (WP2-WP6) deals with research and innovation activities. In fact, within WP2 the FO process will be developed enabling the selection of the optimum draw solution(s). Subsequently, WP3 is related to the optimization of the membrane material and the development of the membrane cleaning protocol, as well as the optimization of the entire FO process.

Thus, it becomes feasible to examine the processes of energy recovery and nutrient valorization in the following WP4 and WP5, respectively. Eventually, WP6 is oriented towards the evaluation of the integrated process of FO-UASB-Struvite precipitation systemfrom an environmental, economic and social point of view, while guidelines for potential up-scaling of the process into a demonstration scale system will be implemented. It should be noted that WP6 will give and receive feedback from all technical WPs in order to optimize the performance of FORWARD-WATER system.

WP1

Project management

Objectives

  • Manage the project to meet the budget and the time schedule
  • Ensure reporting is undertaken
  • Ensure project mitigation measures are assessed and applied

WP2

Development of the FO and draw solution investigation

Objectives

  • To implement and investigate the performance of FO as a pre-treatment process for domestic wastewater treatment
  • To obtain stable long term performance of the FO process
  • To develop draw solution selection protocol that can integrate the FO process with the downstream anaerobic treatment

WP3

Testing alternative membranes and FO optimization

Objectives

  • To investigate and determine the most effective membrane material for the FO
  • To implement and demonstrate the most efficient and cost-effective cleaning method for the FO process
  • To optimize FO performance and to achieve a concentration factor 6-10

WP4

Post-treatment of FO concentrated effluent for energy recovery

Objectives

  • To investigate the impact of salinity and ammonia to anaerobic treatment and to propose mitigation mechanisms
  • To accomplish more than 70% recovery of the chemical energy contained in sewage
  • To optimize the amount of biogas produced and its methane concentration

WP5

Post-treatment of FO concentrated effluent for nutrient recovery

Objectives

  • To investigate and accomplish nutrient recovery from the FO concentrated effluent by chemical precipitation of struvite
  • Production of high purity slow release fertilizer

WP6

Evaluation and up-scaling of FORWARD WATER system

Objectives

  • Apply functional and economic indicators of a new wastewater management concept and evaluate the technological solutions against environment
  • Evaluate the sustainability of the FORWARD-WATER through the application of environmental impact

WP7

Dissemination and Communication Activities

Objectives

  • To develop an effective dissemination and communication strategy
  • To communicate and disseminate the project results during and after the lifetime of the project
  • To ensure widespread awareness of the developed project’s technologies
